Every single member of the Batfamily lies about their taste in music

Damian will claim that he only listens to classical music and that everything else is beneath him.

Damian will unironically listen to trashy Arab pop and the absolute worst Bollywood songs known to man (Dick introduced him to them and he hates the fact that sometimes he gets Sheila Ki Jawani stuck in his head during missions)

Tim will put on the most ear grating hyper pop you've ever heard and claim with full chest that these is the peak of humanities capabilities with music (Damian, Jason and Steph have all tried to kill him for this take) He will also play stuff like the living tombstones and sing it obnoxiously loud when he's working on the computer.

Tim however loves his 90s grunge and it's all that's playing in his headphones. (think nirvana, pearl Jam, Melvins, Alice in Chains etc) He has tracked down so many shirts and concert posters and watched every bit of content from the older shows.

Jason will claim he only listens to east coast rap, biggie, Nas, Jay etc and maybe some older metal. He will fight you on east vs west coast music, there will be weaponry involved.

Jason likes rap music... he unfortunately prefers west coast rap and has listened to no vaseline like 500 times. He will deny this till the day he dies...again. (Dick knows and threatens to tell Steph)

Steph will steal the aux and play Taylor Swifts greatest hits until one of the Boys threatens mutiny. Every single one of the bats has had style stuck in their heads during a stakeout at least twice. She will claim that the only rap song she can tolerate in Eminem and the 7/11 is Beyoncés best song.

Steph is an underground fan, think the dude selling mixtapes on the subway type shit. She also unlike Jason genuinely loves East Coast Rap music more than anything and knows every single wu-tang clan song by heart, same with Biggie. Not only does she love the music she also spends any free time binging those "history of rap and its consequences" videos and has been a firm believer that P.Diddy had a hand in a lot of the Death row records well...deaths.

Cass, well everyone thinks Cass has really good taste bc its Cass and she has zero flaws (don't @ me) she never takes the aux and will usually listen to her music while she's chilling or doing stretches. None of them have heard or seen a single one of her playlists except Duke.

its all 2010s top 40s pop music and like the trashy kind too, Beauty and the Beat, Kesha, Katy Perry. It's her turning of her brain time and she will be straight vibing to Rude! by magic or Boom Clap or Shower. she has shown this to Duke, smirked and told him that even if he tried to tell anyone they wouldn't believe him.

Duke is the only one who doesn't... lie. He just hides a few things. Lies of omission don't count as lies when the bats will lie to you about what they had for breakfast, while they are visibly eating breakfast. Duke says he listens to everything and he does. Literally everything. His patrol Jam is offensive bc it with start with Norwegian death metal and immediately switches to "like a G6" followed by kendrick Lamar and then descendants Disney channel movie music.

Bruce... Bruce is just weird, everyone asks him and gets a different answer. Bc he doesn't... like music. Like at all. It's all noise, his mother played instruments so he learned like 14 and he hates how they all sound. He just like vague batwings fluttering in dead silence.

Dick Grayson will obnoxiously play top 40 and radio music religiously around the bats. He claims it's the best music for rhythmic acrobatics and trapeze work and that true! Jason hates this kind of music the most, it's formulaic and holds no substance and drives him insane.

But Dick only listens to that music when he's moving, flipping doing high energy stuff. When he just wants to chill? This man has the most depressing music taste you've ever seen. You know that sad song from ur favorite artist that you can't listen to without crying. Yeah that's his bread and butter. Every single song is just flat out tear inducing, some of these bands have like 100 listeners and he is one of them and it's just their saddest song that reads like suicide note. The titans have conducted an intervention bc its just... concerning. He just thinks it's neat!

Hosea is one of those "I like everything except country and rap" types, but hand him the aux and you will get a bunch of weirdly named indie bands that makes you feel seen or something. Either that or nonstop Journey / Boston rotation.

i unironically enjoy mystreet!gene as a character. don’t get me wrong he’s absolutely disgusting in high school (black-mailing and i think tryna kiss a 14yr old), even though i do enjoy him as a villain. but i also like that he’s introduced in my street as being way chiller now. he’s just some guy down on his luck who needs a job. he really struggles to stay afloat (as we can see when aphmau literally has to get him a house cause he doesn’t have one) and i think it just shows that he peaked in high school, which, in a way, is a punishment for his past actions — as he deserves.

but it kind of takes a dip into tragic when he’s discovered rummaging through garroth, laurance & zane’s bins for food. or when he’s visibly exhausted working as a bin man. sure working a tiring job is one thing, but having to steal from your neighbours in order to eat is just depressing. and the fact that he hides it when garroth and laurance question him; he’s clearly ashamed of his financial situation compared to the way more well-off protagonists of mystreet (namely the people on the street itself), who, to my knowledge, never have to worry about such a thing.

i also like how, immediately upon sasha and zenix moving in to his home they spray paint the shadow knights logo, and do so on all the bins on the street. idk what it is but to me it shows how zenix & sasha are clinging to their high school days, because it was the best time of their lives too, compared to gene who isn’t. it shows to me that he has grown past that while they have not.

and we can tell gene’s experienced growth rather than just suddenly changing because when ivan insults him he immediately takes on the ruder tone he had in high school (“no one takes that tone with me,” etc). so it’s very clearly still in him to be horrible, but he chooses not to be.

idk i just really like the growth he demonstrates even if it’s subtle or just me interpreting things weird.

unironically the only thing i actively dislike about Mastermind (ignoring "only death can rend our love apart") after replaying it constantly is "since long before the golden angels fall". too many words crammed, i could barely hear what he said or see Lucifer at first, let alone catch the "ozz n bee know hes full of shit" thing, but half of the angel characters in HH are blonde #mustprotecteurope anyway, the golden part is spectacularly pointless, otherwise Satan is the peak HB of songs

It'd be kind of a neat line in a show that could keep itself halfway consistent or stick to a single set of rules for its lore, but alas.

hey there, absolutely go use my alfendi!! it feels like an honor to know my art was able to accurately depict him for you 🙏🙏 and for thoughts on the game im just gonna write them because my artist hand isnt working today LOL

so the game was great, super cool, in retrospect i think the adage of the layton franchise actually kind of benefited this story in the long term (provided some cool parallels, hooked the player through subversion the entire way through, also i just like any mention of layton what can i say). Lucy is adorable and while a little underbaked her tailspin in case 9 and the latter half of the ending felt really freaking good to play. i’m usually a huge bastard about any storyline set in a foreign country but this game did a good job of staying sensitive enough about its portrayals of foreign characters while still maintaining the raw edges that kind of define this game for me.

alfendi’s ambiguous multiple personality disorder is best understood by reading jekyll and hyde, go do it, im making you. also read house of leaves and the picture of dorian gray NNNNEEEOOOWWWW they’re classics for a reason and parallel kind of cooly with the profs characterization. side note that kind of ties into the unpolished quality of the game, i love how weirdly crass it is. like yeah, blood and whatever, but also so many sexy women??? it feels like this game took the ‘all of these old ladies are flirting with layton’ quality of the og trilogy and turned it up 10 notches (this is a good thing i think). i loved dolly like i’ve said, dolly and lucy definitely talk after her case- i imagine theyre not friends, but they catch up sometimes over coffee or at her concerts ^_^ i imagine any stories lucy would tell get turned into songs later, which makes her kind of weary lol

and roscoe if only because of his similarities to raymond shields, but i’m also a huge sucker for the “pull a person aside and ask if they scored it with the love interest yet” trope such a normal amount…… im so glad they did it twice..!

TLDR; great game, not even trying to be layton but succeeding at being ghost trick lite. pacing is a little bogged down by the excess cases near the middle of the story, but the characters and mysteries are cool enough that i forgive it. everybody needs to play cases 6-9 now they are unironically peak. also cant believe i got harry dubois’d by the layton protagonist (im not clarifying what that means)

oh one more note, since im not expecting a sequel to explain it my opinion is that alfendi was either adopted as a teen or is layton’s actual biological son

TANGENT here on character ethnicities. I think it's a mistake to generally give this show much credit for ~representation~ given how all the characters are written The Same and the fact that besides Allura and Keith, their backgrounds have absolutely 0 bearing on the show. It is funny to me that Allura and Keith are also the only two of the main cast with non-white VA. Hm! Inch resting! I will unpack that further at another point because this show is FRAUGHT, not only with the existing tropes and genre conventions of a lot of space sci fi, but also plenty of other shit.

Am I particularly. PLEASED that the 3 most narratively hurt and screwed up characters so far are the OBVIOUSLY JAPANESE guy (because his name is fucking Takashi Shirogane there's no ambiguity there lmfao. 3/4 of the other earth paladins are ethnically ambiguous) and the 2 characters that are aliens and not voiced by white people? NOPE! NOT ONE BIT! And I worry it will get WORSE.

That said there's also just a total lack of development for our Ambiguously Brown (thus far at least) characters so.

Really how Inch Resting that the only character that gets to fulfill what she set out to do so far is Pidge. Who is unambiguously. Respectfully. Whiter than pure cocaine.

AND ANOTHER TANGENT about Altea for a moment. I do understand that the writers may not have INTENDED anything by having a hereditary monarchy that made a superweapon be their edenic pre-war state. But the implications of that are. Rather gross to me.

AT THE SAME TIME Altea can be deeply flawed with a lot of capacity for underpinning horrors in governing structure and STILL have their eradication be an insurmountable and colossal evil. Because ALL people have great capacity for evil. There is not one person whose fundamental relation to others would not be irreparably altered when given unlimited power. That doesn't make the loss any less great. The loss is of something irreplaceable. The loss is so vast and incomprehensible because it is a loss of PEOPLE.

No people is perfect. To claim that is flawed, it is disrespectful to us all! No people deserves to be flattened, to be homogenized, to be made a monolith. But regardless of perfection the loss of one? The deliberate and total eradication of a people is ALWAYS and MUST ALWAYS be considered a great evil. And the total eradication of a people must NEVER be framed as the result of what Those People did. Because it NEVER is. No matter what Altea did or was, their eradication was NOT their fault. Altea could've been a bit awful or rather wonderful and it DOES NOT MATTER because ultimately it would have ALWAYS been an unforgivable evil to eliminate them entirely.

This show fails to explore that. It fails pretty fundamentally at that because it gives us SO LITTLE exploration of power dynamics and has so little nuance. There SHOULD be exploration of the fact that a superweapon is a symbol of peace! There SHOULD be exploration of the fact that the Galra as an empire created this culture of blood purity and did AT LEAST one genocide. There should be exploration of the fact that like. There are deep structural injustices on every level in this show

IN FACT THE SHOW SHOULD DIG INTO THE MILITARISTIC STUFF GOING ON ON EARTH BECAUSE. WOOF. WOOF BRO. But they won't because it's a show made for children that doesn't have any guts to actually explore this in a way that you could make acceptable for children. Child soldiers, peacekeeping superweapons, a genocidal empire, I could go on. All of this is. So very fraught.

TANGENT THE THIRD: I also feel several kinds of ways about Haggar and we can get into that later because I feel like it's so. Ugh. To have someone from the victimized people be the one corrupted by this Pure Evil entity and then ultimately collaborate with her patriarchal husband to eradicate her people is so. UGH. That's... UGH. It makes my skin CRAWL. I will have to write all of this up in greater detail eventually but. The gender stuff in this show is. Ugh.

Y'know, having filled out one of these 'favorite media' things I have to wonder why Lily didn't put some of her obvious favorite movies/shows on her diagram whatsoever.

I mean, a lot of my favs are family films and/or horror/drama/xenofiction. While I'll stand by some being "good", I'm not gonna fault anyone for thinking ill of any of these picks:

I just unironically put up Skunk Fu! and Neopets in my fav bucket lists; if her favorite Star Wars film really is Attack of the Clones I don't get why she'd be downplaying that. She's pretty brazen about what she stans or insists is actually 'peak fiction' because it's her fav. I mean, I guess that's just it tho...

If Skunk Fu! was Lorch's favorite show, she couldn't just be her guilty pleasure fav, she'd HAVE to insist that it's pure art and better than Ninja Turtles or Kung Fu Panda for totally-not-spite-related reasons despite it being a C-rated show at best. Honestly my favorite little guys gotta be ClownPierce, Branzy, Squiddo, Kaboodle and PrinceZam, they just play around with the title like it's hot potato but the point of the game is to hold onto the flaming root vegetable for as long as possible. kinda like american football! /silly

And uhhhhh favorite thing about them?? I love that Clown is kinda the definition of "looks like could kill you, but it's a cinnamon roll" bc he's really sweet irl but he THRIVES off the scared whimpers of his enemies lmao I mean, that "have fun you guys~!" he threw over his shoulder at the players in Karl's video with him says it ALL. he's also just good at pvp and that's always fun to watch. Branzy bc he's like, Clown's OPPOSITE: "looks like a cinnamon roll, could kill you" — he's SO deranged and psychotic /aff /vpos I saw a tumblr post once that said something something what about neurotic horse significant other and in the tags somebody (clownscasino my beloved /p) mentioned Branzy and yea, that's really him alright. He's also very showman! Very fun to see his videos and how he talks and expresses himself! He has a very particular and specific voice, pattern of speech, word usage that's hard to nail down but is SO fitting to who he is fr. Squiddo bc they're SO funny and chill and silly! She can turn anything into something fun and I love that actually. They're not afraid of trying and she can be conniving if they wish to, even though her thing is more being silly and goofy — whatever they and Ash has me DEAD ON THE FLOOR, SOBBING AND GASPING FOR AIR /VPOS

Kaboodle bc she's strong-willed and gives SO. MUCH. LITTLE SISTER ENERGY that it's low-key radioactive — very relatable of her, killerbunnies my beloved sibling dynamic. She's high spirited and relatively extroverted and I low-key kinds wish I were s little more like her (I'd be a menace, god made me afraid of social interactions for a reason /silly) And PrinceZam,,,, oh PrinceZam, the gender playdoh himself,,,,,,,,, idk I think he's really fun! He's down to clown with gender fuckery and plays some of the most interesting characters ever! (the tipping point into watching his videos actively for me was his role in PVP Civilization, if you were curious). Especially I've been meaning to get into watching his LifeSteal stuff from this current season (s6) bc I think the struggle with his morality he's trying to depict with his character is one of the most interesting things I've found lately (he's sworn not to kill. on LIFESTEAL) also unironically when I drew the Pretty Kitty Princess I low-key spent a WHOLE WEEK going "damn. that's GOOD good" and not bc the drawing was particularly great, but bc the Pretty Kitty Princess is genuinely PEAK gender envy to me lmao

I’ve seen people on Twitter talk about how Hazbin Hotel was snubbed since it wasn’t nominated for an Emmy and talking about how people who don’t like the show are happy about it and like.

Idk I can only speak for myself, but tbh I’m kinda sad that the show, from the beginning, just…wasn’t good. Not Emmy good, at the very least. (more below)

There’s this weird expectation that, if you are at all critical or dissatisfied with what the Hazbin show ended up being, that you’re a horrible person who is obsessed with seeing everyone who worked on the project fail, and have just hated the show and its creator since the beginning of time and like…

I did not want the show to be bad!! I was really hoping that I’d be wrong, that I’d be pleasantly surprised, that the show would be entertaining and well written and paced. But, for me, it just wasn’t.

I have tried to be very forthcoming about the things I liked and what I wished the show would have focused on more. I wanted to like the show!!! I would have LOVED the show if its writing and animation were on par with other adult animated shows.

However when it came out, it had a LOT of problems, and it seems really clear to me that the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences picked up on them, just as I did.

It’s so odd to me that a lot of Hazbin “super-fans” think that if you’re critical of the show you must hate it, because the majority of people I’ve spoken to who are very critical of the series ARE fans of the series who felt disappointed by it when it actually came out.

Switching gears a bit—It’s genuinely kind of disheartening to see so many people prop the show up as if it was the best most perfect best show ever when, in reality, Hazbin is a perfectly serviceable and fun show, but is not as deep or as well-crafted as it claims to be, and as a lot of other adult animation that’s out right now.

Recently, I’ve seen this belief develop in some fandoms that what you love needs to be somehow validated or “proven” to be good by winning an award or receiving accolades.

And while I definitely understand the desire to see something you love be recognized for the artistry that’s put into it, the truth is that sometimes there are really really good pieces of art and media that don’t get the recognition they deserve, and there are really really bad pieces of art and media that are treated like holy grails.

Like I’m saying all of this as someone who’s favorite movie is fucking Tron: Legacy. I LOVE Tron Legacy. It’s so fun and I love the characters and environment. But it’s also bad!!! It’s a very convoluted plot, and characters don’t get a lot of development and it has the “born sexy yesterday” trope which I hate and it’s one of my favorite movies of all time!!! I love it!!

But it doesn’t have to be a perfect masterpiece for it to be a masterpiece to me personally. I can recognize that while I love it, it’s not particularly amazing by any means. It’s kind of a shit show. The story and writing and cinematography don’t deserve any big awards. But I love it and that’s all that matters!

I do not think that Hazbin Hotel deserves any awards for being an excellent television show, and I can also really see why the people who decide Emmy nominations did not nominate it.

But who cares what I think!! My favorite movie is Tron Legacy! And I completely unironically love the 1993 Super Mario Bros. Movie!!!

The point I’m trying to make is that, while yes, it can be disappointing when something you love isn’t recognized, but that shouldn’t take away the value the show has to you if you love it.

Hazbin Hotel can be a bad show, and it can still be your favorite show that you love more than anything. Tron Legacy can be a bad movie and I can still love it and think it’s peak cinema. It’s okay. It’s okay to like and love media that isn’t perfect. It’s okay to criticize the media you love.
